Allotment gardens in Viars

Project region : Viars neighborhood, Gaillac, Tarn

Duration : since 2003

Aim : create allotment gardens for social development

Course of action :

  • build a wooden cabin
  • create an association
  • attribute 16 lots of land

Gardening in the neighborhood

The allotment gardens were created in 2003 to help with the social insertion of the North-African community in Viars. These kitchen gardens were also created to lift the image and change the bad reputation of this particular area.

The gardens reignited the collective feeling that had disappeared and helped to reduce negligence and vandalism throughout the neighborhood. Each of the 16, 150m2 lots were attributed to families of Viars, making them self sufficient for their vegetable production.

An independent association, (Association des Jardinins Familiaux de Viars) was then created to help involve the gardeners when needed.
Every year the gardeners organise a convivial garden party around a big barbeque and drinks.

SOLIDARITÉ continues to support the project.
